Happy June 1st and Happy Pride Month!
I feel like this year has definitely proven that there is still a lot of work to be done for the advancement and protection of all rights, especially LGBTQIA+ rights. Pride is a great time to reflect and celebrate the wins of the LGBTQIA+ and show support as an ally.
The first, and maybe easiest way to celebrate Pride, is to show your support. This can be as simple as wearing a shirt, hat or piece of jewelry. Just this simple act can show those around you that you support and stand with the LGBTQIA+ community.
If you plan on purchasing an item, make sure you are supporting LGBTQIA+ businesses OR businesses support and are donating to LGBTQIA+ causes. During Pride Month a lot of "Rainbow Washing" can occur. Urban Dictionary defines rainbow washing is “the act of using or adding rainbow colors and/or imagery to advertising, apparel, accessories, landmarks… in order to indicate progressive support for LGBTQ equality (and earn consumer credibility)—but with a minimum of effort or pragmatic result.”
A few other ways to show support:
-make direct donation to LGBTQIA+ causes, whether it be your time or money.
-educate yourself and use correct pronouns
-read and listen to LGBTQIA+ artist
-be an ally OUTSIDE of Pride Month!
There are a TON of "Pride" items out right now and many companies are finally "doing better" and not just rainbow washing to capitalize on Pride. Here are some of my favorites I came across:
Bombas Pride Calf Sock 4-Pack
Alt Stitchery Love is Love Canvas
Kate Spade Rainbow bobby pins
Kate Spade love shack mini heart crossbody bag
Kate Spade Rainbow coin purse
Kate Spade rainbow love asymmetrical studs
Kate Spade rainbow heart twisted headband
Target Pride Bocce Ball Set Multicolor
Target Schitt's Creek "Ew David" T-Shirt
Bath and Body Works Love Wins Collection
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Lilly Pulitzer Pride Run Around Hat
This is Lilly Pulitzer's first year doing a Pride Capsule. It's a very small release with only two items. I do wish they had the print artist create a special print instead of just putting rainbows on a hat and sweater (a sweater in June?). Anyways, it is a start and they are donating proceeds to "It Gets Better".
What are ways you are celebrating Pride and showing your support?
